History
Ichikawa Station opened on 20 July 1894 as the western terminus of the single-track Sōbu Railway, becoming an intermediate stop on 9 December 1894 when service extended to Honjo (now Kinshichō). The line was nationalised on 1 September 1907 and reorganised as the Sōbu Main Line on 12 October 1909. Electrification reached Ichikawa on 15 March 1933 (from Ryōgoku) and continued east on 15 September 1933. Freight ended on 1 October 1964. Quadruple-tracking, elevation and the Rapid line came into service in stages between 12 July 1970 and 15 July 1972. The Shapo Ichikawa station building opened on 14 September 1972 and the station passed to JR East at the 1987 privatisation; Suica use began on 18 November 2001.

Notes
Although the Keisei Main Line's Ichikawa-Mama Station lies about 500 m to the north, JR does not classify it as an interchange and no joint commuter passes are sold for that pairing.
