History
Higashi-Yamanashi Station opened on 5 February 1957 as a passenger-only station on the Japanese National Railways (JNR) Chuo Main Line in the city of Yamanashi, Yamanashi Prefecture. It was a petition station built at the request of local residents who fully funded its 3.7 million yen construction cost; at opening only eight up trains and eight down trains stopped daily. The station became unstaffed on 1 October 1970. With the dissolution and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, it came under the control of JR East. Automatic turnstiles using the Suica IC card system began operation on 16 October 2004, when the station was also incorporated into the Tokyo Suburban Area zone. Its station number is CO 38.

Notes
Because Higashi-Yamanashi's platforms can only accommodate six-car trains, regular trains in JNR-era eight-car formations passed through without stopping until privatization in 1987, when all local trains began stopping at the station.
