History
Yamanashishi Station opened on 11 June 1903 as Kusakabe Station, when the Imperial Japanese Government Railways' Chūō Main Line was extended from Hatsukano (now Kai-Yamato) to Kōfu. It handled both passengers and freight from the start, was renamed Yamanashishi on 15 January 1962, lost regular freight service on 15 November 1982, and shed baggage handling on 14 March 1985. JR East took over at the April 1987 privatisation, Suica service began on 16 October 2004 with inclusion in the Tokyo-suburban zone, and the wooden depot was modernised in December 2005. An over-track concourse and north–south free passageway opened on 2 March 2020; the south exit and plaza followed in February 2021 and April 2022.

Notes
Until Joban Line's Sanuki was renamed Ryūgasaki-shi in 2020, Yamanashishi was JR East's only station whose name ended in the suffix "-shi" (city).
