History

Hida-Kanayama Station is on JR Central's Takayama Main Line in Funato, Kanayama-chō, Gero, Gifu. It opened on 21 March 1928 as the terminus of the Takayama Line extension from Shirakawaguchi (the line was renamed the Takayama Main Line in 1934), then became an intermediate station on 14 April 1929 when the line was extended to Yakeishi. Freight ended on 21 December 1978 and luggage handling on 14 March 1985. It passed to JR Central at privatisation on 1 April 1987, and the station's celebrated 'kuri-kowai' chestnut-rice bento ended sales in September 2001 with the discontinuation of the Kitaalps express. On 1 April 2012 the station was demoted to simplified-commission status, run by the local tourism association.

Notes

Although named after Kanayama (originally in Mino Province), the station sat in Hida Province's Shimohara village when it opened in 1928 — the towns were merged into the new Kanayama-chō in the postwar Showa-era amalgamation and the whole town only joined Hida in 1955, 27 years after the station opened.
