History

Yokoshiba Station opened on 1 June 1897 with the Sobu Railway's Naruto-Choshi extension, handling both passenger and freight traffic. As a steam-era refuelling point it had long scheduled stops. The Sobu Railway was nationalised on 1 September 1907 and absorbed into the Sobu Main Line under the 1909 line-name regulations. Freight handling ended on 1 July 1973 and the Sakura-Choshi section was electrified the following year. JR East took over at the 1987 privatisation. Limited services Shiosai stop here. The wooden hip-and-gable station building still in use today dates to 1897 (refurbished in 1998) and is, as of 2024, the oldest surviving station building in Chiba Prefecture.
