History

Kai-Yamato Station opened on 1 February 1903 as Hajikano Station, the temporary terminus of the Chūō Main Line eastward extension from Ōtsuki. Its life as a terminus was brief: on 11 June 1903 the line was extended on to Kōfu and it became an intermediate stop. Freight handling ceased on 1 April 1966 and the current station building was rebuilt in November the same year. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984 and the station became unstaffed on 26 May 1984. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR East. The station was renamed Kai-Yamato on 1 April 1993, following changes to the surrounding municipality, and IC card use through Suica began on 16 October 2004. It was re-de-staffed on 1 April 2015.
