History
Gakugei-daigaku Station opened on 28 August 1927 as Himonya Station, taking its name from the local district. The neighbouring Tokyo Aoyama Normal School moved to nearby Setagaya in April 1936 and the stop was renamed Aoyama-Shihan; further institutional renamings produced Dai-Ichi-Shihan ("First Normal School") on 1 February 1943 and Gakugei-Daigaku on 1 July 1952, after Tokyo Gakugei University. Tokyo Gakugei University itself moved to Koganei in 1964, but the station name stayed. The line was elevated through the area between 1969 and 1970, removing sixteen level crossings. The retail complex GAKUDAI KOUKASHITA opened beneath the viaduct in April 2012, and platform doors entered service on 16 March 2014.

Notes
Tokyo Gakugei University left for Koganei in 1964, but a 1999 survey to consider renaming the station found over half of locals opposed, so the eponym lingered.
