History
Hamasaka Station opened on 10 November 1911 as the terminus of the Railway Agency's San'in Main Line extension from Iwami, in what is now the town of Shin'onsen in Mikata District, Hyōgo Prefecture. On 1 March 1912 the line was extended westward to Kasumi, completing the through route from Kyoto. The station's second building dates from March 1959, and an underground passage to the island platforms 2 and 3 was completed in 1967. Freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel service in 1986. The station passed to JR West at the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways. JR West resumed direct station operation from 1 July 2021 after a contracted period, and the building still hosts a staffed Midori no Madoguchi ticket office.

Between 2008 and 2022 the station building hosted "Tetsuko no Heya", a 45-square-metre rail-memorabilia gallery rented for free from JR by the town, displaying around 320 items including girders from the old Amarube Viaduct and a steam-locomotive name plate.
