History

Higashi-Chiba Station opened on 20 December 1965 as a Japanese Government Railways station on the Sōbu Main Line in Chūō-ku, Chiba City. It was built on the site of the former Chiba Station after that station was relocated 0.8 kilometres west to eliminate a switchback configuration in April 1963. The platforms passed to JR East on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways. An automatic ticket gate began service on 27 June 1995, Suica acceptance was added on 18 November 2001, and elevators were installed at the south exit on 18 March 2008 and the north exit on 25 December 2008. The station building suffered roof damage from Typhoon Faxai on 9 September 2019.

Notes

Although the platforms can accommodate ten-car formations, the two cars at the Sakura end are not used by regular trains; Sōbu Rapid Line and Yokosuka Line through-services pass without stopping.
