History
Shimomizo Station opened on 29 April 1931 as a stop on the privately operated Sagami Railway between Atsugi and Hashimoto. The line was nationalised on 1 June 1944 and merged into the Japanese Government Railways' Sagami Line. Freight operations were discontinued in October 1962. With JNR's dissolution and privatisation on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR East. Suica IC gates went live on 18 November 2001. The ticket window closed on 26 December 2014, and on 13 March 2016 the station was destaffed under remote oversight from Hashimoto Station, followed by completion of a refreshed station building on 5 August 2016.
