History

Shimoasō Station is on the Takayama Main Line in Kawabe, Gifu Prefecture, 37.9 km from the line's starting point at Gifu, operated by JR Central. It opened on 25 November 1922 as the terminus of the Takayama Line extension from Mino-Ōta, handling both passengers and freight, and became a through station with the extension to Kami-asō in March 1924. Freight handling ended in August 1961, parcel handling in February 1984, and the station was destaffed in April 1985. JR Central inherited it at privatisation on 1 April 1987, and the wooden station building was replaced with a simple shelter in March 2003.

The points between platforms 1 and 2 here have been replaced with high-speed two-way turnouts allowing through trains to pass at up to 110 km/h.
