History
Kanae Station opened on 17 December 1926 with the Ina Electric Railway's extension between Ina-Yawata and Iida, in what is now the city of Iida, Nagano Prefecture. The Ina Electric line was nationalised into the Iida Line on 1 August 1943. Freight handling ended on 1 December 1971, agency status was introduced in February 1984, and parcel handling stopped in 1985. JR Central took over with the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, and the staffed ticket window was closed on 1 April 2013, making the station unattended.

Notes
"Kanae" is homophonous with the verb meaning "to grant a wish," so the station's admission ticket was long sold as a good-luck charm, stamped by staff with characters such as 合格 (pass) or 夢 (dream).
