History

Zama Station opened on 28 July 1927 as Shin-Zama Station on the Odakyū Odawara Line, the prefix "Shin" being added because the present-day Sōbudai-mae was at that time named Zama. It was renamed Zama-Yūen on 1 July 1937 in connection with a planned amusement park, the second on the line after Mukōgaoka-Yūen; although land was acquired, the project foundered with the outbreak of war, and the station was renamed Zama on 15 October 1941. Local services began calling at the station as standard in June 1945, and the semi-express became a regular caller on 1 October 1946 followed by the commuter semi-express on 25 March 1960. An overhead-concourse station building and free east–west passage were completed on 6 April 1978, and renovation including elevators completed on 22 March 2003. The station became a section-semi-express stop on 11 December 2004, took on station number OH 31 in January 2014, and became a commuter semi-express stop on 17 March 2018.
