History
Kawaji Station opened on 26 December 1927 as Ina-Kawaji on the Ina Electric Railway's Tenryūkyō - Dashina extension. It took its current short name on 1 August 1943 when the Ina Electric Railway was nationalised, the original Kawaji being renamed Mikawa-Tōgō. The June 1961 Sanroku flood disaster inundated the station to roof level and Iida city later designated the surroundings a disaster-risk zone, hollowing out the neighbourhood. A further serious flood struck in 1983, and embankment works in 2001 led to the line being realigned and the station moved east; the old building was demolished on 21 May 2001. The station has been unstaffed since 1 December 1971 and joined JR Central on 1 April 1987.
