History

Ishikawachō Station opened on 19 May 1964 with the Negishi Line's first segment from Sakuragichō to Isogo. Built spanning the Nakamura River, it was sited for joint access to Yokohama Chinatown to the north and the Motomachi district to the south. Japanese National Railways initially proposed 'Yamatechō Station' or 'Minato-Yokohama Station', but local residents successfully petitioned for the present name. The station passed to JR East at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. After Motomachi-Chūkagai Station opened on the Minatomirai Line in 2004, the sub-name 'Motomachi-Chūkagai' was added to JR signage on 15 September 2016. Contract operation began on 1 November 2020.

Notes

Because of the many Christian girls' mission schools clustered nearby, locals nicknamed Ishikawachō the 'Otome (maidens') Station' for the heavy ridership of female middle- and high-school students.
