History
Takenami Station opened on 25 November 1919 as Takeori Signal Stop on the state-built Chūō Main Line, in what was then Takenami village. It was reclassified as a signal post on 1 April 1922 and elevated to a full passenger station, taking its present name, on 1 April 1926. Freight handling ran from 1928 to 1959, and parcel handling ended in October 1970, when the station became unstaffed. With the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR Central. TOICA was introduced on 25 November 2006, and a rebuilt station building opened in February 2008 followed by a new south exit on 19 March 2008. The station has two opposed ground-level platforms linked by a footbridge.

Notes
Because the platforms sit on a curve, conductors sometimes broadcast an extra warning to passengers just before the train pulls in.
