History

Shinji Station opened on November 7, 1909 as the terminus of the Japan Government Railways line extended from Matsue, in what is now Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. When the line was further extended to Shōbara on June 10, 1910, the station became a through stop. On October 11, 1916 the privately built Hikami Railway opened from Shinji to Kisuki, making the station a junction; that line was nationalized in 1934 and became the Kisuki Line. Freight handling ended in 1983 and parcel handling in 1986. With the 1987 privatization of Japanese National Railways, the station passed to JR West. From June 22, 2017 it became a stop on the luxury Twilight Express Mizukaze, with the station building renovated to mark the occasion.

Notes

Despite being relatively close to Izumo Airport, Shinji has no direct airport bus service - the buses run instead from Naoe Station two stops away.
