History

The station opened on 1 April 1927 as Ōhatano Station on Odakyu's new Odawara Line, the 'Ō-' prefix added to distinguish it from a then-existing Hadano Station on the small Shōnan Tramway. After successive additions of semi-express (1946), express (1949), and commuter services through the 1950s and 1960s, the station was renamed Hadano on 9 March 1987 once the tramway had been closed. A bridge-style station building and free passage were completed on 13 December 1996, and the structure received a 1997 MITI Good Design selection. Selected Romance Car services began calling on 22 August 1998, and rapid-express service was added on 11 December 2004.

Notes

Hadano's selection for the original 1927 'Five Great Stations' on the Odawara Line — alongside Inada-Noborito, Shin-Haramachida, Sagami-Atsugi, and Shin-Matsuda — reflected its strategic role at the foot of the Tanzawa massif.
