History

Shin-Asahi Station is on the JR West Kosei Line in Takashima, Shiga Prefecture, 48.3 km from the line's starting point at Yamashina, and carries station number JR-B15. The station opened on 20 July 1974 with the Japanese National Railways' new Kosei Line as an unstaffed passenger-only halt, and a staffed ticket window was added in April 1982. It passed to JR West on 1 April 1987 at JNR's privatisation. ICOCA service began on 21 October 2006 via simplified card-only turnstiles, and on 12 March 2011 the timetable revision added Rapid service stops here, which required platforms to be extended for twelve-car new-rapid trains. Station numbering was introduced on 17 March 2018, and the station was made fully unstaffed on 1 October 2025.

Notes

Until platforms were lengthened with the 2011 timetable revision, Shin-Asahi was the only stop on the new-rapid network that could not accommodate the twelve-car formations the service used; the upgrade brought Shin-Asahi into line with the rest of the network and added it to the new-rapid stopping pattern.
