History

Minami-Hikone Station opened on 1981-06-30 as a passengers-only stop on the Japanese National Railways' Tōkaidō Main Line between Hikone and Kawase, in a part of Hikone otherwise lightly served by rail. It passed to JR West with privatisation on 1987-04-01, and the Biwako Line nickname for this section began on 1988-03-13. Automated turnstiles were installed on 1998-04-14, ICOCA acceptance on 2003-11-01, and station numbering JR-A14 on 2018-03-17. The Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office closed on 2019-03-16, replaced by a Midori Ticket-Machine Plus the following day.

Notes

Reserve land was set aside outside each platform for a future 2-platform/4-track expansion that never came; some of it was used in 2002 for the station's first elevators.
