History

Higashi-Tagonoura Station opened on 15 September 1949 between Hara and Suzukawa (now Yoshiwara) on the Japanese National Railways Tōkaidō Main Line, in response to a local petition from residents of present-day Fuji City, Shizuoka. Gravel and cement haulage, along with construction of the original station building, were carried out as volunteer labour by nearby residents. Freight handling ceased in February 1984, and on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Central with the breakup of JNR. Automated ticket gates arrived in 2005 and TOICA service in March 2008. From 1 June 2025 the station became unstaffed under the customer-support service scheme.

Notes

A large stone monument commemorating the station's opening stands in the forecourt, and the still-active wooden station building carries a painting of Mount Fuji on its outer wall.
