History

Shimokawai Station opened on 11 November 1934 as a general (passenger and freight) stop on the Sanshin Railway between present-day Tōei and Nakabe-Tenryū. The line was nationalised on 1 August 1943 and merged with several other local railways to form the Iida Line. All freight and parcel services were discontinued on 1 December 1971, and the station became unstaffed at the same time. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, the station passed to JR Central. The original island platform was rebuilt as a single side platform in 2008, with a small waiting room added on the platform.

Notes

In fiscal 2024 the station served an average of just five boarding passengers per day, one of the lowest figures on the Iida Line as the surrounding mountainous Sakuma district continues to depopulate.
