History

Kyōwa Station is a Tōkaidō Main Line station in Obu, Aichi Prefecture, operated by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) and located 349.5 kilometres from Tokyo Station. It opened on 7 December 1933 as a simple stop on the Japanese Government Railways, initially serving only through-running gasoline cars from the Taketoyo Line. Wartime fuel shortages forced its closure on 1 November 1940; service resumed on 11 July 1945 but was restricted to commuter pass holders until full passenger operations were restored on 1 September 1951. The elevated station building was completed in 1972, automatic ticket gates were installed in 1992, and TOICA support began in 2006. Station number CA61 was assigned in March 2018.

Notes

A 2007 fatal track incursion at this station led to a long-running negligence suit that reached the Supreme Court of Japan in 2016, which ruled against JR Central and limited the legal liability of family carers of dementia patients.
