History
Shimokō Station opened on September 1, 1921 with the extension of the Tetsudōshō San'in Main Line from Tsunozu to Hamada, in what is now Hamada, Shimane Prefecture. Freight handling ceased on October 1, 1974 and operations were contracted out from June 20, 1977. Parcel service ended on February 1, 1984 and the station became unstaffed on March 14, 1985, briefly returning to staffed status when JR West took over at JNR privatization on April 1, 1987 before becoming permanently unstaffed in March 1990. From December 6, 1997, the former station office has operated as a local community centre. The unbuilt Imafuku Line was originally planned to terminate here.

Notes
The unbuilt 'old-route' alignment of the Imafuku Line, abandoned without ever opening, was planned to terminate at Shimokō.
