History
Hamada Station opened on 1 September 1921 as the new terminus when the San'in Main Line was extended from Tsunozu, and became a through station on 10 March 1922 when the line reached Sufu. The original wooden building was replaced in May 1951 by a partially two-storey reinforced concrete structure. Hamada served as a long-distance terminal for the overnight Izumo express from 1961, upgraded to a limited express in 1972, until that service was cut back to Izumoshi in 1998. Freight handling ended on 31 December 1983 and parcels in March 1985. The station became part of West Japan Railway Company on 1 April 1987 at privatisation. A temporary station building came into use on 26 June 2008 during reconstruction. The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 13 December 2020, with a Midori no Kenbaiki Plus replacing it the following day.

Notes
The unbuilt Imafuku Line, intended to run from Hiroshima through to Hamada, was authorised under the prewar Railway Construction Law; partial construction reached as far as Sandankyō before the project was frozen and the partial section was abolished in 2003.
