History

Ōsumi Station opened on 1 December 1952 as an unstaffed single-platform halt on the Japan National Railways Katamachi Line in what is now the city of Kyōtanabe, Kyoto Prefecture. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 it came under JR West, and the line gained the marketing name Gakkentoshi Line in March 1988. The station was rebuilt in March 2002 with two opposed side platforms, allowing seven-car trains to cross, and gained a station building and staffing at that time. ICOCA support followed on 1 November 2003, and station numbering as JR-H25 was introduced in March 2018. The ticket window closed on 30 June 2025 and the station reverted to fully unstaffed operation the next day.
