History
Hōden Station opened on 14 May 1900 as part of the Sanyo Railway 42.3 km from Kobe, built using materials reclaimed from the original Akashi station building. Sanyo Railway was nationalised on 1 December 1906, and the station was relocated 0.1 km to its present site on 1 November 1907. Electrification of the Nishi-Akashi to Himeji section was completed on 10 April 1958. An overhead station building opened on 8 April 1981, replacing the original southern entrance with a south-north passageway. Operations transferred to JR West and JR Freight on 1 April 1987, the JR Kobe Line nickname was adopted the following March, and station numbering JR-A80 was added on 17 March 2018.

The original 1900 Hōden Station building was made from timbers salvaged from Akashi Station's first-generation depot, and a Sumitomo Cement freight line ran into the station until 22 March 1997.
