History

Sonoda Station opened on 20 October 1936 on the Hanshin Kyuko Railway (now Hankyu) Kobe Line, between Kanzakigawa and Tsukaguchi, in what is now the city of Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture. From the outset it was laid out with two island platforms and four tracks, although the station sat in farmland at the time. Elevation work began in 1974: the down line was raised in 1978, with the project complete by 1979 and the elevated station building entering service in April 1980. Station numbering (HK-05) was introduced on 21 December 2013. Although technically in Hyogo, the station lies a five-minute walk from Osaka Prefecture and is the easternmost stop in Hyogo.

Notes

Before the station was built, a temporary platform stood near this site to handle race-day crowds at the adjacent Sonoda Racecourse.
