History

Kamikoma Station opened on 3 May 1902 as a station on the private Nara Railway between Tanakura and Kizu, in what is now Kizugawa, Kyoto Prefecture. The Nara Railway was absorbed by Kansai Railway in 1905 and nationalised in 1907, after which Kamikoma served on the JNR Nara Line. Freight handling ended in 1972, parcel services in 1984, and the station became unstaffed later that year. It passed to JR West at the 1987 privatisation. Automatic gates were installed in 1999 and ICOCA acceptance began in 2003. Station numbering (JR-D18) was introduced in March 2018, and from April 2023 the entire day became unstaffed.
