History

Shōnai Station opened on 15 May 1951 as a community-petitioned new station of the Hankyu Takarazuka Line between Mikuni and Hattori (today's Hattori Tenjin). At opening the locality belonged to Shōnai-machi of Toyono-gun, Osaka Prefecture; it was later absorbed into the city of Toyonaka. On 2 February 1956 the so-called Shōnai Incident temporarily halted services. In 1966 a new pedestrian underpass beneath the platforms was opened linking the east and west sides of the station, and the ticket gates were moved underground at the same time. Station numbering (HK-42) was introduced on 21 December 2013.

Notes

Although Shōnai is currently the busiest of the Takarazuka Line stations that the Express service does not stop at, the station was once one of the busiest in all of Hankyu. Around 1970, only Umeda and Jūsō in Osaka Prefecture handled more passengers, and Shōnai outdrew major mid-line stations like Toyonaka, Ishibashi and Ikeda on the same line and even Ibaraki-shi and Takatsuki-shi on the Kyōto Line. Current numbers are less than half of the 1968 peak.
