History

Kōshien Station opened on 1 August 1924 as a seasonal extra stop on the Hanshin Main Line to serve the new Hanshin Koshien Stadium, and became year-round on 16 July 1926. That year the connecting tramway-style Kōshien Line began running to Hama-Kōshien, extending to Kami-Kōshien on 25 June 1928 before being abandoned on 6 May 1975. On 24 April 1949 a domino-like crowd collapse of departing spectators killed one and injured eleven. Following damage in the 17 January 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, full service was restored by 26 June 1995. A multi-year reconstruction begun in November 2011 was completed in August 2015, station numbering HS 14 was introduced on 1 April 2014, and platform doors entered service in 2025–2026.

Notes

The station's roof over the centre platforms is shaped to evoke a white baseball, reflecting the station's role as the gateway to Hanshin Koshien Stadium for the national high-school baseball tournaments.
