History

Ōishi Station opened on 12 April 1905 with the inauguration of the Hanshin Main Line. The station was relocated about 100 m north on 2 July 1967 when the Hanshin Main Line was straightened and elevated. Direct through service from Sanyō Electric Railway via the Kobe Rapid Railway began on 7 April 1968 with Ōishi as the eastern terminus. The Great Hanshin earthquake of 17 January 1995 suspended operations until 26 June, when restoration between Mikage and Nishinada reopened the line. From 10 March 2001 all Sanyō through services were shortened to Sannomiya, ending Ōishi-origin services; that same revision saw up-line expresses become all-stops. On 28 October 2006 every Hanshin express stopped, but the express was shortened east of Nishinomiya on 20 March 2009, after which all express categories pass Ōishi. Station numbering (HS 28) was introduced on 1 April 2014. In March 2014 Hanshin installed solar panels on the platform roof — the first such installation in the company — expected to supply about 30% of the station's electricity.

Notes

Ōishi is one of several Hanshin Main Line "stations on the river" — along with Mukogawa, Kōroen and Ashiya — because the Toga River runs directly beneath the platforms. Until the line was elevated in 1967, the station stood about 100 m south, on the west side of the Toga River; the former site is now a public park.
