History
Akogi Station opened on 31 December 1893 when the Sangū Railway began passenger service between Tsu Station and Miyagawa Station in present-day Tsu, Mie Prefecture. The railway was nationalised on 1 October 1907, becoming part of the Sangū Line under the Imperial Railway Agency in October 1909, and was reorganised into the Kisei Main Line on 15 July 1959. Freight handling ended in August 1980 and the station was destaffed on 21 December 1983. Operation passed to JR Central on 1 April 1987. The original wooden station building survived as a reminder of the line's freight-era prosperity until it was demolished on 30 September 2014; a new building opened on 2 March 2015.

Notes
The station name derives from the nearby Akogi-ura coast, also reputed as the etymological source of the Japanese word akogi meaning "shameless" or "greedy"; the area was historically known for poachers fishing in waters reserved for shrine offerings.
