History

Nishikujō Station opened on 1 October 1898 as a stop on the Nishinari Railway between Noda and Ajikawaguchi. After nationalisation in 1906 it was assigned to the Nishinari Line in 1909. On 25 April 1961 the section toward Osaka was absorbed into the new Osaka Loop Line while the branch to Sakurajima became the Sakurajima Line, making Nishikujō a key junction; full loop running began on 22 March 1964 after the tracks were elevated. Hanshin Electric Railway opened its own Nishikujō station as the terminus of the renamed Nishi-Osaka Line on 21 May 1964; Hanshin through service to Ōsaka-Namba began on 20 March 2009 when the line was renamed the Hanshin Namba Line. The Universal Studios Japan opening in 2001 made Nishikujō the principal transfer for park-bound riders.

Notes

The "American Patrol" march has been used as the Loop Line platform jingle here since March 2014 — chosen to nod to the station's role as the transfer point for visitors heading to Universal Studios Japan.
