History
Akashi Station opened on 1 November 1888 with the extension of the Sanyō Railway from Hyōgo, and a month later was overtaken in the network when the line reached Himeji. Nationalised in 1906 and made part of the San'yō Main Line in 1909, the station began electric services in 1934 and saw freight handling end in 1960. Elevation of both tracks was completed in 1964, moving the platforms about 160 m west of the old site. Closed briefly after the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, the station added IC fare gates and ICOCA in 2003 and is now operated as a directly managed station under West Akashi.

Notes
The mascot displayed in the concourse—a Shigaraki-ware tanuki named "Akashi Ponta"—has been replaced four times since 1981; the third Ponta was succeeded in 2019 after vandals smashed the back of its head and started using it as a trash can.
