History

Sumiyoshihigashi Station opened on 3 September 1900 as Sumiyoshi Station on the Koya Railway's extension between Dotonbori (today's Shiomibashi) and Osho-ji (today's Sakai-higashi), then renamed Sumiyoshihigashi on 11 September of the same year via official gazette notice. Through successive operator changes it became a Koya Tozan Railway station in 1907, an Osaka Koya Railway station in 1915, a Nankai Railway station in 1922, a Kinki Nippon Railway station in 1944, and finally a Nankai Electric Railway station on 1 June 1947. Up- and down-bound passing tracks were added in 1960 and 1961 to allow priority trains to overtake locals. The station lost its express stops in 1968 and now serves only local trains, with rapid express, express, semi-express and limited-express services passing through. Station numbering NK52 was introduced on 1 April 2012.

Notes

Until 23 November 1970, all Shiomibashi Line trains terminated at Sumiyoshi-Higashi because the predecessor Kishinosato Station lacked a Namba-bound platform for the Koya Line.
