History

Suminoe Station opened on 21 August 1907 on Nankai Railway's Main Line, between the original Sumiyoshi Station (abolished 1917) and Sakai. It was closed on 15 December 1916 and re-opened on 5 February 1928. Through the wartime reorganisation it became a Kinki Nippon Railway station on 1 June 1944 and a Nankai Electric Railway station on 1 June 1947. The outer two tracks were elevated on 10 April 1977 and full grade separation followed on 15 June 1980. Station numbering NK09 was introduced on 1 April 2012. Suminoe Depot lies immediately west of the station, allowing two early-morning Namba-bound services to originate there. Until 1984 a portion of Nankai's Tennoji branch line services also terminated at Suminoe.

Notes

The station's official kanji spelling 住ノ江 differs from the ward name 住之江 — the latter spelling is considered a misprint when applied to the station name.
