History

Izumi-Fuchū Station opened on 18 July 1929 as the terminus of the partial opening of the Hanwa Electric Railway. The line was extended to Hanwa-Higashi-Wakayama (now Wakayama) on 16 June 1930, making the station an intermediate stop. It became a Nankai Yamate Line station with the December 1940 merger and was wartime-nationalised on 1 May 1944 as part of the Hanwa Line. With JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR West. A new overpass-type station building with a free passage opened on 24-25 May 2013 as part of area redevelopment, and station numbering JR-R37 was introduced in March 2018. A new bus terminal in front of the station opened on 1 April 2014.
