History

Higashi-Hagi Station opened on 1 November 1925 as the terminus of the Japanese Government Railways' Mine Line, extended from Hagi. The line continued to Nago on 24 April 1929 and was incorporated into the San'in Main Line on 24 February 1933. Freight ended on 31 December 1983, and the 1 April 1987 privatisation moved the station to JR West. Its present white-walled, samurai-residence-style reinforced-concrete building dates to July 1973. Hagi-area station administration ended on 1 June 2024 when the Nagato Tetsudōbu sub-office was absorbed into the Hiroshima branch. The Midori-no-Madoguchi office closed on 31 August 2021, and the Hagi Tourist Association has run the simple-commission ticket window since the following day.

Notes

Although Hagi has three San'in Main Line stations encircling the delta of the old castle town, Higashi-Hagi — not Hagi itself — is treated as the city's representative station because the municipal hall and most administrative offices are closest to it.
