History

Nishi-Hiroshima Station opened on 25 September 1897 as Koi Station (己斐駅) on the San'yō Railway, when the line was extended west from Hiroshima toward Tokuyama. The line was nationalised in 1906 and designated the San'yō Main Line in 1909. The station was renamed Nishi-Hiroshima on 1 October 1969 and passed to JR West at the JNR privatisation of 1 April 1987. Construction of a new bridge-over-platform station building began on 31 January 2020; a temporary building entered service on 29 March 2020, the interim bridge station opened on 19 December 2021, and the completed building was inaugurated on 20 November 2022.

Notes

A wartime "bullet train" plan from before 1945 envisaged Nishi-Hiroshima as a new "Shin-Hiroshima" Shinkansen-grade station; the plan was never implemented.
