History

Kiwado Station opened on 9 December 1928 as the terminus of a branch of the Japan Government Railways Mine Line, extended west from Shōmyōichi (now Nagatoshi). On 13 October 1929 the line was extended further west to Nagato-Furuichi, making the station an intermediate stop. The branch was absorbed into the San'in Main Line on 24 February 1933. Freight handling ended on 1 June 1963, and the station was destaffed on 20 December 1971. The original two-platform layout was reduced to one when the down platform was abolished; a simplified building replaced the earlier structure in March 1978.
