History
Sunami Station opened on 19 March 1930 as the terminus of the Sanko Line during its initial extension from Mihara, in the city of Mihara, Hiroshima Prefecture. The line was extended further to Aki-Sakizaki the following year, leaving Sunami as an intermediate stop, and the route was incorporated into the Kure Line in 1935. Freight handling was discontinued in 1960, the station became simple-consigned in 1970 and was nationalised under West Japan Railway Company at JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987. The current concrete station building dates to 1990, replacing earlier wooden structures, and the station is unstaffed; ICOCA has been accepted since 2007.
