History

Izumi-Sunagawa Station opened on 16 June 1930 as Shindachi Station on the Hanwa Electric Railway, was rebranded Hanwa-Sunagawa Station in 1932 and Sunagawa-en Station on 1 August 1941. With the 1944 wartime nationalisation it took its present name on 1 May 1944 and became part of the Japanese Government Railways Hanwa Line, and was transferred to JR West at the 1987 privatisation. Goods traffic was withdrawn in 1981 and parcels in 1985, and from 11 March 2011 the station became a stop for a selection of Kuroshio limited-express services. Station numbering JR-R48 was assigned in March 2018, and the east-side Midori no Madoguchi closed at the end of March 2019, followed by the west-side counter on 18 March 2022.

Notes

The eastern entrance retains the triangular-roofed Hanwa Electric Railway station building, one of very few such original 1930s structures still standing on the line.
