History

Shimizuura Station opened on 15 December 1938 on the Japanese Government Railways Kisei West Line, between what are now Kainan and Kamogō stations. Service was suspended without formal closure in the 1940s and resumed on 1 October 1952. On 15 July 1959 the line was renamed the Kisei Main Line, and on 1 September 1961 the station was relocated 400 metres towards Wakayama. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. Located in Kainan city, Wakayama Prefecture, it is one of three Kinokuni-line stations whose name is known among rail enthusiasts as difficult to read.
