History
Chōfu opened on 27 May 1901 on the San'yō Railway when the line was extended from Asa to Bakan (today's Shimonoseki). The route was nationalised on 1 December 1906 and became the San'yō Main Line in 1909. From 1932 to 1969 the San'yō Electric Tramway's Chōkan Line connected to the station forecourt. Freight handling ended in 1984 and parcel handling in 1985. The 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation transferred control to JR West. The present overhead station building with free pedestrian passage was completed on 17 March 2012 after a year of temporary operations. ICOCA fare cards launched on 1 April 2023, and on-site staffing was withdrawn on 1 December 2024 in favour of intercom support.

Notes
Despite the name, the station sits more than two kilometres from the actual Chōfu castle town and historic centre; the 1947 postwar imperial tour used a special train between here and Onoda.
