History
Kudamatsu Station opened on 25 September 1897 with the San'yō Railway's extension from Hiroshima to Tokuyama. The railway was nationalised on 1 December 1906 and the line became the San'yō Main Line in 1909. The current elevated station building was completed on 30 November 1965 — the first elevated station building in Yamaguchi Prefecture. With the 1987 privatisation of JNR, the station passed jointly to JR West and JR Freight. Container freight handling began on 3 December 1994. From 12 March 2022 ICOCA and automatic fare gates entered service, the Midori-no-Madoguchi closed on 18 May 2022 and was replaced by a Midori ticket machine the next day. From 1 May 2025 the station no longer has permanently stationed staff; passenger assistance is handled remotely via intercom.

Notes
To distinguish Kudamatsu from another 下松駅 (read 'Shimomatsu') on the Hanwa Line in Osaka, tickets issued at this station are printed with '(陽)下松' (San'yō Kudamatsu) and ICOCA history displays show 'クダマツ' in katakana. A private siding leads to Hitachi's Kasado Works, making this station the originating point for shinkansen and other rail-vehicle deliveries shipped by koshu transport.
