History
Hikari Station opened on 11 April 1912 as Nijigahama Station in present-day Hikari, Yamaguchi Prefecture. After the line was rerouted via Yanai in 1934 it briefly belonged to the Yanai Line, and on 1 February 1941 the station was renamed Hikari. A 1944 reversion restored it to the Sanyō Main Line. A Midori-no-Madoguchi reserved-ticket window opened on 1 April 1974, and the present station building was completed on 5 July 1983. JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 transferred operations to JR West. ICOCA and automatic gates began on 12 March 2022; the Midori window closed on 18 April 2022 in favour of a ticket vending machine. On-site staffing ended on 1 December 2024.
