History

Atashika Station opened on 1 April 1956 as the temporary terminus of Japanese National Railways' Kisei-Nishi Line. The line was renamed the Kisei Main Line on 15 July 1959 when the final extension to Miki-sato closed the gap with the eastern half of the route. The station has been unstaffed since 21 December 1983, though staff were dispatched to sell tickets until about 1992. Operation passed to Central Japan Railway Company on 1 April 1987 at privatisation. The wooden station building, similar in design to neighbouring stations opened around the same time, dates from the original construction of the line.

Notes

Staff are still dispatched to sell tickets on the day of the Kumano Grand Fireworks Festival each August.
