History

Kirime Station opened on 21 September 1931 as part of the Japanese Government Railways' Kisei-nishi Line, when the section between Inami and Minabe was inaugurated, in what is now Inami, Wakayama Prefecture. After the unified Kisei Main Line was completed in 1959 the station was reassigned to that line. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1971 and parcel handling on 1 April 1978; the station became unattended on 14 March 1985 and, after partial staffing under a commissioned arrangement, fully unattended again in April 2019. With the JNR privatization on 1 April 1987 it came under JR West. ICOCA support began on 14 March 2020. Two opposed side platforms are linked by a footbridge.

Notes

The town of Inami took over the station building from JR West in 2019 free of charge and spent roughly 16 million yen renovating it for use as a community hub; visitors who provide photographic evidence of having visited the station can also collect a free station card.
