History

Chidori Station opened on 30 September 1991 as an added stop on JR Kyushu's Kagoshima Main Line, serving the newly developed Chidori Park Town residential area built by what is now the Urban Renaissance Agency. Automatic ticket gates were installed on 19 February 2000, and SUGOCA IC fare service began on 1 March 2009. Barrier-free renovation work was completed on 25 February 2011, adding four elevators, an east entrance, and accessible toilets; an archaeological discovery during the east-side work caused a brief delay. The Midori no Madoguchi reservation counter closed on 11 March 2022, and the station became directly JR-operated on 1 October 2023.

Notes

At opening, the station was placed under the supervision of JR Kyushu's first female stationmaster, and the building was designed by a female JR Kyushu employee.
